The project involves 14 artists and 12 writers.

Artists

Artists are invited to illustrate a full color, letter sized (8.5 inches x 11 inches) piece in minimum 300 dpi and landscape orientation. Artists will have three months to create one work. Both traditional and digital art are welcome, however traditional pieces must be scanned at 300 dpi or higher and fully edited upon submission. Check the FAQ for more detailed technical specs.

The calendar’s theme is very open ended. We request that each artist’s work focuses on Red/Green, is SFW, and celebrates the month they’re creating for. Artists can approach this any way they’d like. Perhaps featuring a particular event that happens in that month (e.g., Pokemon Red and Green’s release date, Halloween, cherry blossom viewing)? Or capturing the feeling of that month/season? Or something else? It’s all fair game.

Each artist requests 3 months they would like to create for. The mods will assign one of those three months to each artist, ensuring that everyone gets to create for a month they want while also ensuring that every month is claimed.

A writer will work with each artist and create a fiction piece to accompany their artwork. While the artist is the leader of the team, we encourage writers and artists to brainstorm together to create a cohesive piece that both can enjoy working on.

There will be both physical and digital versions of the calendar.

Writers

Writers will have three months to create a 1,000 to 1,500 word piece to accompany a specific month’s artwork. Check the FAQ for more detailed technical specs.

These pieces will be beta-read by a member of our beta-reader team before publishing. Writers are also encouraged to find and use your own beta-reader before our beta team does their final pass, but this is optional. Feel free to ask other writer participants to “trade” beta-reading!

Each fic must in some way reflect the art piece it’s written for, focus on Red/Green, and be SFW. Just like artists, each writer requests 3 months they would like to create for. The mods will assign one of those three months to each writer, ensuring that everyone gets to create for a month they want while also ensuring that every month is claimed.

Writers are definitely in a supportive and encouraging role for their assigned artists. Feel free to brainstorm ideas with your artist to make the project more exciting for everyone, but ultimately writers are following the artist’s lead.

The writers’ appendix will be published digitally in PDF and ebook formats as well as a physical book.

Pinch Hitters

A pinch hitter is a writer or artist who fills in instead of a participant who has to drop out.

We’re not sure we’re going to need pinch hitters, but just in case, you can join our pinch hit mailing list here.

Pinch hit pieces are due August 27. Pinch hitters will have less than 3 months to create a piece to the same standards as the other project participants. The shortest estimated creation period is 22 days. Please review the Schedule and consider your real-life obligations carefully before joining the mailing list.

With that said, applying as a pinch hitter does not obligate you to take any pinch hit. It just means you will have the chance to consider pinch hit opportunities when they arise.
